Cannabis Rescheduling: Is Weed Finally Getting a Federal Glow-Up?

Cannabis is back in the national spotlight, and this time it is not just smoke.
The DEA is holding hearings on a proposal to move marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III under federal law. That is a big deal because Schedule I is the same federal category cannabis has been stuck in for decades, basically the government’s “no medical use, high abuse potential” shelf. Schedule III would put cannabis in a lower-risk category and officially recognize that it has medical use. The DEA hearing process began June 29, 2026.
But before everybody starts rolling victory joints, here’s the important part:
Rescheduling is not the same thing as federal legalization.
If cannabis moves to Schedule III, it could help with research, medical access, and some major business tax issues. One of the biggest industry impacts is tied to IRS Code 280E, which currently blocks many cannabis businesses from taking normal business deductions because cannabis is still treated as Schedule I federally. Moving to Schedule III could reduce that tax burden for qualifying cannabis businesses.
Still, this does not mean weed suddenly becomes legal everywhere. Adult-use cannabis would still depend on state law. Licensed dispensaries and delivery services would still matter. Testing, labeling, age verification, and legal compliance would still matter.
In other words: cannabis may be getting a federal glow-up, but it is not a free-for-all.
There has already been a limited federal move involving certain FDA-approved cannabis products and state-licensed medical cannabis, but that change does not fully legalize cannabis federally and does not erase the conflict between state and federal cannabis laws.
So what does this mean for regular customers?
Simple: the cannabis world is changing, but the safest move is still the same.
